Scene 1: Opening an Account
I went to the Bank of Georgia, right across from Gori City Hall. To open an account for international transfers, you’ll need:
- a passport,
- a Georgia address (Airbnb address works) AND home-country address
- and a local (MAGTI) + home-country phone number (because all verification codes come by text).
- for local phone number? Just go to MAGTI shop with passport & Georgia address (Airbnb OK)
Surprisingly, the front-desk staff spoke fluent English, while the regular bankers didn’t. So the front-desk assistant sat beside me and translated the entire process — from the form to the BOG(Bank of Georgia) app tutorial.
In Korea, that would be unthinkable. There, receptionists are usually security staff from an outsourced company. Here, they’re the bridge between two languages. And they do it with warmth. If you’ve been shocked by the stoic service in some Georgian shops, this place will heal you.
Scene 2: Receiving Money via Western Union
The next day, I came back to ask about receiving a transfer sent from Korea via Western Union. All you need is your passport, the MTCN number, and the receipt (screenshot works) with your full name exactly matching your passport.
But the clerk couldn’t find my transfer in the system. “Is it my problem?” I asked. She smiled.
“No, it’s probably our system. It usually fixes itself. Maybe come back tomorrow? Or you can check from home — I’ll show you how on the app.”
In Gori, time solves problems more often than people do. Electricity goes out — “Wait.” Gas stops flowing — “Wait.” The bank can’t find your money — “Wait.”
At first, it’s maddening. Then, somehow, you learn to breathe slower. The rhythm of this town rewires your patience. Three hours later, I checked the app — and it worked. Just like she said.
🌿 Reflection
In Korea, efficiency is the religion. In Gori, patience is the ritual. Sometimes the fastest way to solve something is to let time do the work.
