1. Understanding the World Through Your Fingertips
I woke up in the morning, ready to do laundry. “Oh, I am screwed.” The button had sunk in and wouldn’t come back out. This Turkish washing machine, Vestel Aura 1000TS, sometimes refuses to work when its switch gets stuck in the “pressed” position. (commonly used in homes in Georgia, Russia, and Türkiye.)

No matter how many times I pressed the button, nothing responded. Two red LEDs kept blinking, and even worse — there wasn’t a manual anywhere. I felt sorry even imagining telling the landlady. She would jump up to help me immediately, which made me feel even more guilty.
So I decided to fix it myself. To be honest, through school, office jobs, and running my shop, I’ve never repaired a machine in my life. If something broke, I either called a technician, or worse — I bought a new one because of some marketing trick. Still, I wanted to try. And if I messed it up? Then what — apologize? Buy her a new washer? Complicated thoughts flashed across my mind. I’m broke.
Anyway. Let’s go. Turns out this machine is simple. No dryer. Just mechanics (switch & motor) + mainboard panel (SW controls). If the mainboard is dead, only a technician can replace it. But the lights were blinking normally, the Ready light was on — so the mainboard was fine.
This had to be a mechanical issue. I did laundry three days ago — the motor wouldn’t suddenly die. I pressed the switch by hand again. A normal switch should make a crisp click-click with springy resistance. But this one had no rebound at all. The button was jammed somewhere. Old, cheap washers run into this problem all the time. I went to Gori Mall and bought a screwdriver for $5. Removed the top cover.

Inside, I saw the front switch module. It had popped out of its plastic clip and slipped backward. Which meant the circuit thought the button was being pressed constantly. I had to tap it forward from the inside using a long stick. I barely managed to pull switch #2 back into place.
Damn. Switch #3(Easy Ironing) was blocked by the mainboard — my hand couldn’t reach it. From the outside, you could see unnatural “play” in the switch. That means the mainboard switch was stuck in the pressed state.

So I slid a flathead screwdriver under the switch from the outside, lifted it gently, and pulled. Click. Click. Click. All three switches returned to their positions. But it still didn’t start. On the Aura 1000TS, if the buttons leave their normal position, the machine’s electrical inputs get distorted.
There’s no LCD to show error codes. Just Morse-code-like blinking. When No Spin + Easy Ironing flash together, it means any malfunction. The machine becomes a crying child. I have to be the doctor and interpret the signals.
Chat GPT listed everything: child lock, door lock, pump issue, water level sensor… Since it worked fine until recently, the most likely culprit was Child Lock. This model turns on Child Lock if any button stays pressed for 3 seconds. If it were a door lock issue, the Ready light wouldn’t turn red. To disable Child Lock, press Start/Pause + Easy Ironing together for 3 seconds.
One second… two… three… Silence. Then the red light flickered. A humming sound — the drum started turning. The old metal heart came back to life. Complicated appliances are hard to fix. You just buy new ones. But this Turkish washer is simple. Press with your fingers, listen with your ears, observe the light. The world begins to flow again.
In the end, it’s simple: The “click” is the machine shaking hands with you. If you don’t hear it, open the lid. Pry, twist, pull — and connection will return. To celebrate the reunion, I hung my laundry. A rooftop cat wandered out to find a sunny spot.

Coffee, tea, and cake joined the scene. Half the slice was enough. I was full.
